Benefits of domestic partnerships does not extend to a federal level

Civil unions can only grant state level benefits. Now I do believe that only state level benefits would have been granted to same-sex marriages in CA, but it would have been a step forward in the right for federal rights. So consider the view point that Prop 8 has caused the gay rights movement to take a step backwards, and is delaying federal rights to same-sex couples.
