Marriage should not exist as a government function, period.
The concept of 'marriage' as a legal institution, defies what the forefathers were trying to achieve. While not in the Constitution, as far as I can tell, the founding fathers were trying to separate 'church & state'. \"Marriage\" is a term that is religious and therefore polarizes people. Marriage should be left to religious institutions and the law should be changed to make every 'marriage' a domestic partnership. We are arguing over semantics instead of concentrating on the important issue, the human right issue. It shouldn't be 'gay' marriage. What about those people who aren't gay and have no family other than their 'chosen' family? Shouldn't they be allowed to form domestic partnerships that involve no sexual behavior? Why should the law care what type of sex someone has or doesn't have? Gay people shouldn't be getting married; instead, the rest of us should be lobbying for domestic partnerships to replace 'marriage' as a legal term and leave 'marriage' to the churches.
